Speaking in Florida, October 29: “Marriage in Crisis”

Capitalists no longer believe in capitalism.  One might argue that they never did, for the anti-capitalist motives of capitalists have been recognized since Adam Smith.  That's why he railed against government-protected privileges and monopolies, which in our day are called crony capitalism.  The free market revolution, then, was not so much the rise of a capitalist class as the rise of a certain economic belief among this rising class:  The belief that competition, rather than governmental favoritism and restraint of trade, is the best way to get ahead.

That belief is dying.  Why?  Probably because the dominant psychological and organizational type of capitalist is no longer the entrepreneur, bless him, but the bureaucrat.  That part isn’t surprising; the economies and technologies of scale require large organizations, and the managers in the second generation after the founding of a firm don’t burn with the founder’s fire.

What is surprising is that nowadays even those who do have entrepreneurial ability try to convert themselves into government dependents as quickly as they can.  Case in point:  Elon Musk.  Tesla Motors and Space X would be nothing without state patronage.  This is not free enterprise; it is merely socialism with outsourcing.

 

Letting the Other Guy Make the Rules

A good many years ago, I was contacted by a couple of speechwriters and policy folk for one of the presidential candidates to ask me for help with “the vision thing.”  I gathered that they were talking to a lot of people.  Since the specific issue they were asking about was one I know something about, we had a conference call.

You must not imagine that this happens to me often; in fact it was the only time.  That may give you a clue as to how the talk went.

I told them that I thought P about the issue.  That didn’t satisfy them, because they wanted to know what their candidate should say about it.  Naturally, believing P, I said I thought he candidate should say P.  Then they told me he couldn’t say P.

I asked why he couldn’t say P.  Did he find P difficult to explain?  Perhaps I could help with that.  No, that wasn’t it.  The reason he couldn’t say P was that the media always framed the issue in terms of Q.  I told them I understood that, but Q was a misleading way to frame it.  So, I said, their candidate needed to reframe the issue for the public in terms of P, and explain why Q was misleading.  And I suggested some of the ways he might do this.

They began to get irritated.  As they explained, they weren’t interested in reframing the issue in terms of P.  All they wanted was for me to tell them how the candidate could justify his position in terms of Q.  Why?  Because – as they said again -- that’s how the media framed it.

So I put my point just a little more strongly.  If their candidate allowed his opponents to get away with framing the issue in a misleading way, he would lose the argument.  If he wanted to win the argument, he would reframe it.

As though they were talking to a dimwitted child, they repeated that reframing the issue was impossible.

I answered that it is never impossible to reframe an issue:  That’s what you do in a republic.  You have to frame it so tersely and memorably that even a hostile media can’t resist quoting you, and the quote can’t be taken out of context.

I said the other side understood this very well.  That was why it was winning the argument.

That’s when the gentlemen lost patience with me.

Don’t you understand?  The media are all-powerful!  It doesn’t matter how they frame an issue, because once they do, it’s set in stone!  Nobody can challenge it!  It has to be accepted!  NOW will you tell us how our candidate can make his argument?

I said you would be able to guess how it went.

 

Pitch for Switch Hits Glitch

Question:

I'm at a vocational crossroads.  Recently I earned an M.S. in electrical engineering.  Since I began college, though, I've also been interested in apologetics and philosophy.  I've done a lot of reading, taken a few classes, and taught introductory apologetics at my local church.  My wife and I even moved near a seminary so I could work part-time in engineering while also studying there.  My goal was to get an M.A. in philosophy, then work part-time as director of Christian education for a church as well as part-time in engineering.

For a while that went all right, but after my dad died, my wife and I moved back to my home state and moved in with my mom to be close to her. The new plan is going fairly well; we have a decent size house and my mom and my wife get along well. I plan to continue my degree through the seminary's distance education program.  At least until this summer, my mom is willing to support us with the money from my dad's retirement, so that this spring I can try full-time study and see if I'm cut out for it.

A few days before we moved, though, my mentor at the seminary threw a wrench into the plan.  He called me up and said he didn't think I should move at all, either for my sake or the school's.  His reasons were that I was doing brilliantly, that I was a good influence on the rest of the students, and that he thought I ought to be a professor myself.  He thinks I should aim higher than being a lay teacher, and envisions me becoming someone like him -- a person who teaches hundreds of others to be lay teachers.

My family and friends think the professor line is a good one, and that working on switching devices the rest of my life seems pretty dull.  Besides, part-time engineering jobs are hard to find; though I had one before, I haven't found one here.

On the other hand, I feel guilty about this possibility of a "call" to the academic life.  After all, I have to provide for my wife and future kids, and being a professor is less financially secure than being an engineer.  I also feel that I should be reading all the time, which taxes my relationship with my wife because it makes it difficult to relax and spend time with her.  She doesn't work, but is going to be studying Latin and volunteering and helping with the house.  Tonight she asked me if I could help with the dishes.  I said no, because I thought my time would be of more use studying and her time doing all of the cleaning.

How can I know whether I could do well as a professor?  How can I know whether my original career plan would be better?  How should I deal with this guilt that I'm feeling?  And how long should I go on living with my mother? Considering that she doesn't have any physical or financial needs right now, is that last question even important?  Probably I need to be thinking about other questions too, so please tell me what you think.

Reply:

Let's start with the vocational questions.  As I see it, there are two of them.  One is about substance: Should you leave engineering and pursue further graduate study with a view to becoming a seminary teacher? The other is about process: Is it necessary or wise to make your decision about this right now?

The process question is easy.  Vocational decisions should never be made abruptly.  All right, I make an exception in case of voices from burning bushes, but you haven't heard one of those.  I can understand your seminary mentor's regret to see you leave -- it will make his life less interesting -- but frankly, he did you a disservice to throw you into turmoil at the last minute.  Discerning the call of God requires time, reflection and experience.  If God were telling you something that required an instant response, like "Get out of Dodge," I think He would have used extraordinary means to make clear that the message was really from Him.

Once that question is settled, the other question looks different.  Actually, it's premature.  Instead of asking whether you should change careers, you should ask whether you're in a position to decide.  The answer is that you aren't -- yet.  Sure, compelling reasons for a change in career may accumulate, but they haven't; you haven't given them enough time.  Consider: You've prepared for years to do engineering.  Don't you think you should give it a chance before getting out of it? The fact that your friends and family think working on switching devices would be boring is irrelevant.  They aren't the ones who would be working on them, and some people love that kind of work.  It must have held some interest for you, or you wouldn't have gone into that field.  What you find interesting is far from being the only data relevant to considering what God made you for –- but it’s part of the data.

If you're still worried about being bored, here's a test.  Work at your profession full-time for a few years.  If the work you’re bored, you'll know it, and if you're not, you'll know that too.  I'd give different advice to a freshman trying to choose between majors, because he doesn't have that option.  He can't try out the work; he has to make a guess about whether he would like it.  But you're not a freshman, you're a graduate, and you do have the option.  So use it.

You feel guilty about considering a career change because professors make lower salaries than engineers.  That needn't trouble you.  Your family won't starve either way.  On the other hand, you do need to think more seriously about three other things.

  • The first: You're a fully-trained engineer, but only a half-trained teacher of apologetics.
  • The second: As you've already discovered, you can teach at your church part-time, but probably can't work as an engineer part-time.
  • The third: If you do eventually go back to school, you'll need a good deal of savings, not only to pay tuition, but also to cover the interruption in income.

Taken together, what these three points tell you is "Stop trying to split yourself in half."  Go ahead and work full-time as an engineer.  For now, be content to teach at your church on a spare-time, volunteer basis; don't think of this as a way to earn your living, but as a way to continue to explore your other vocational possibility.  In the meantime, save up as much money as possible from your engineering job, in case you do eventually decide to change careers.

At the end of your letter you gave me wide-open permission to advise you about other matters.  I'll take it.  I advise you in the strongest possible terms to stand up straight and take care of your family yourself.  Don't expect your widowed mother to use up her savings to take care of you.  She raised you, taught you, and put you through school; now you're a married man and a graduate, and it's your turn.  At this stage, in your life and in hers, you should be thinking about how you can support her, not how she can support you.

One more thing:  Go help your wife with the dishes.  You write as though giving her a few minutes of your time would have wrecked your whole evening of study and upset the division of labor.  Nonsense.  It's fine that she's the housewife and you're the engineer, but she's helping you bear your burdens, and you need to help her bear hers.  If you want to quote Ephesians 5 to me, go to it, but start with the 21st verse.

 

Where the Action Is

Aristotle’s question endures:  Which is better, the active or the contemplative life?  The one wrapped up in doing things, or the one absorbed in gazing on the truth?

Recently, when a few of my students brought up the question, I reflected on an epigram of Bernard of Clairvaux of which I am very fond, “Some seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge: that is curiosity.  Others seek knowledge that they may themselves be known: that is vanity.  But there are still others who seek knowledge in order to serve and edify others, and that is charity.”

It may seem that someone who speaks like Bernard is siding for practical activity against contemplation, viewing knowledge as intrinsically worthless -- good only as a means to serving others.  This view can’t be right, for unless it were good in itself, how could it serve them?  Besides, Bernard is a contemplative:  The author of the epigram is a man who has given his life to the contemplation of God, who is identical with Truth.

Here is the solution to the riddle.  Aristotle’s God is a solitary monad, “thought thinking itself.”  Bernard’s is a burning unity of three Persons, their love His very being.  The God whom Aristotle admires has no reason to be interested in us.  The God whom Bernard adores made us in His image, woos us like a bridegroom, and suffered for us before all worlds.

It follows that the action of charity is not in competition with the contemplative life, but at its heart.  To contemplate God is to know Him not just as the theorem is known by the demonstrator, but as the Lover is known by the Beloved.

 

The Right Way to Get Angry with God

Although Job was angry about his undeserved sufferings, Job didn’t go away and sulk; he gave God an earful.  It’s plain from the text that he trusted God to judge justly if only He gave Job a hearing; He thought God wasn’t paying attention.  God is always paying attention.  In failing to realize that, Job erred, but he cannot be said to have lacked faith in God’s justice.

Therefore, although God chides Job’s presumption, He approves his frankness.  He tells Job’s accusing friends, who thought they were sticking up for God, that His anger blazes against them, “for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.”  In a magnificently understated line, He tells them that He will forgive them, but not until Job – Job, the complainer! -- has prayed for them.

 

The Biggest Difference Between the Two Parties

The biggest difference between the two parties is not that one tilts left and the other tilts right, but how their respective leaders play their hands.  Democratic Party leadership plays up to its base, which responds, predictably, with loyalty.  Republican Party leadership has contempt for its base, which responds, predictably, with resentment.

The blame is not all on one side.  Even resentful Democrats practice party discipline.  Resentful Republicans wait until the ship is in sight of the port, then set it on fire.

 

Beating Up on St. Augustine

Question:

I really enjoy your blog, and I am writing to get your help and advice.  Someone I know who rejects the Church’s teaching about sexuality wrote to me as follows.  He is a candidate for a theology degree.

"Augustine is clearly the determinative person for western Christianity's thoughts on sex and marriage. There are two places I began my questioning:

“1) Augustine's understanding of desire.  He thinks sex is only good when it makes a child; he does not see a difference between desire and lust (the drive to satisfy particular physical urges with another person).  That is, if non-procreative sex can still have a good as its end, namely the fulfillment of desire which teaches us something about God's love for and desire for us, then there may be space for same-sex and non-procreative sex within marriages.

“2) Augustine's understanding of marriage.  He thinks marriage is the discipline of sexual moderation for the mediocre Christian.  If the celibate is the holier Christian, then marriage is the place of mediocrity.  Yet, there is no mediocre expression of gay sexuality.  So, while celibacy is understood to be a gift from God, it is also understood to be a requirement for those who are gay, and a requirement for Christian faithfulness.  But that suggests that there is something that God may not gift someone with that they must nevertheless exercise on their own, namely celibacy.  That starts to sound like the Pelagian heresy, in which one's own goodness is determinative for the capacity to save oneself.  That does not add up."

I would appreciate your thoughts and advice about how to respond.

Reply:

It seems to me that your friend’s arguments are a series of non sequitur, but this isn’t just about same-sex attraction.  Arguments like his are frequently used to justify heterosexual misbehavior, which is much more widespread.

First faulty argument, concerning the Church’s teaching:

1.  Augustine had more influence on the Church’s teaching about sex than anyone else.

2.  Therefore, we may treat Augustine’s view of sex as though they were the Church’s teachings about sex.

Invalid, because even if premise 1 were correct, the conclusion does not follow.  We cannot substitute an influence on the Church’s teaching for what the Church actually teaches.

Second faulty argument, concerning the good of marriage:

1.  Celibacy is a higher calling than marriage.

2.  Therefore marriage serves no positive good, but only a negative good, restraining lust.

Invalid, because from the fact that the celibacy is even better, it does not follow that marriage is not very good in itself.  In fact, August explicitly declares that marriage serves several positive goods, each of which depends on the difference of sex.  As he writes in On the Good of Marriage, “concerning the good of marriage ... there is good ground to inquire for what reason it be a good.  And this seems not to me to be merely on account of the begetting of children, but also on account of the natural society itself in a difference of sex.

Third faulty argument, concerning lust and desire:

1.  Augustine keeps warning about bad sexual desire.

2.  He must not think there is any such thing as good sexual desire.

Invalid, because Augustine vigorously denies that the Creator of the attraction of the sexes could have created anything evil.  In the treatise I quoted above, he smiles upon the “gravity of glowing pleasure, when in that wherein husband and wife cleave to one another, they have in mind that they be father and mother.”  What else is it to cleave to each other, but to be united in the coital embrace?  Sure, Augustine puts a lot of energy into warning about lust – about disordered sexual desire which rages against nature and reason – but only because the Fall has so deeply wounded us.

Fourth faulty argument, concerning the meaning of temperance:

1.  People who are attracted to the opposite sex are allowed to temper disorderly sexual desire by getting married.

2.  Therefore, people who are attracted to the same sex should be allowed to temper disorderly sexual desire by indulging it in some way.

Invalid, because temperance requires limiting the sexual embrace to its proper occasion.  Desire which is directed to an unnatural object has no proper occasion.  Therefore, indulging it is intrinsically incapable of tempering it.

Fifth faulty argument, concerning the remedy for lust:

1.  People who are attracted to the opposite sex have a legitimate way to relieve their desires.

2.  Therefore everyone should have a legitimate way to relieve their desires.

Invalid, because there is no right way to relieve a desire directed to a wrong object.  People who are attracted to the same sex can do the same thing that people attracted to the opposite sex can do when marriage is not possible:  They can practice the discipline of abstinence.  To many persons today – heterosexuals too -- this seems impossible because their desires are so fierce.  But their desires are made fiercer by continual indulgence.

Sixth faulty argument, concerning consecrated celibacy:

1.  Not every single person is called to consecrated celibacy.

2.  Therefore not every single person is required to be abstinent.

Invalid, because although not every single person is called to the consecrated religious life of which abstinence is a part, every single person, irrespective of calling, is called to be abstinent.

Seventh faulty argument, concerning moral discipline and salvation.

1.  Augustine thinks we are able to practice abstinence.

2.  Therefore Augustine thinks we are able to save ourselves, which is the Pelagian heresy.

Invalid, because as Augustine explains in On Marriage and Concupiscence, even unredeemed persons can abstain from unchaste acts, even if only to avoid trouble.  However, this is not enough.  Salvation requires not just abstention from things that are forbidden, but the transformation of motive by charity, which is a gift of grace.

Remain your friend’s friend, because the mere refutation of his excuses is unlikely to reach his heart.  But to reach his heart, you may have to get past his excuses.
